Frequently asked questions
What OBD-II adapters work with MechanicAI?
MechanicAI works with most popular ELM327-compatible Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) OBD-II adapters. We recommend the OBDLink CX (~$50) for most users, but budget adapters from $15–$25 on Amazon also work. Note: Wi-Fi adapters and older non-BLE Bluetooth adapters are not supported.
What vehicles does MechanicAI support?
All gasoline and diesel vehicles sold in the US and Canada from 1996 onwards are required to have an OBD-II port. Most hybrids and some EVs are also supported. If your car has the port, we can read it.
How does the AI diagnostic work?
MechanicAI uses a two-layer system. Layer 1 instantly looks up your code from a built-in library of common trouble codes — this works offline. Layer 2 sends your code and vehicle profile to our AI engine, which returns a personalized analysis considering your specific car. The AI explains what's wrong in plain English, estimates repair costs, and suggests next steps.
Is my vehicle data private?
Yes. Your scan history is stored on your device. When you request an AI diagnostic, your vehicle data is sent to our backend, which forwards it to Anthropic for analysis and returns the result; our backend is stateless and does not keep a server-side database of your scans or conversations. Your diagnostic data is not sold to third parties, and the app uses no third-party analytics or tracking. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Do I need an internet connection?
For basic code lookup (Layer 1), no — it works completely offline. For AI diagnostics (Layer 2), chat, and live data features, you need an internet connection.
How accurate are the repair cost estimates?
Estimates are based on national averages for your vehicle's make and model. Actual costs vary by location and shop. Use estimates as a starting point for conversations with your mechanic, not as a guarantee.
Can MechanicAI diagnose everything?
MechanicAI reads standard OBD-II diagnostic trouble codes. Some issues (unusual noises, intermittent problems, issues that don't set a code) require physical inspection. MechanicAI is a powerful starting point, not a replacement for a qualified mechanic.
How do I cancel my Pro subscription?
Open the Settings app on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions, then MechanicAI Pro, then Cancel Subscription. You'll keep Pro features until the end of your current billing period.
What does 'Do not drive' mean?
When MechanicAI detects a safety-critical fault (brakes, airbags, steering, fuel system), it shows a 'Do not drive' warning. This means the vehicle may be unsafe. Have it towed to a qualified mechanic. These warnings are hardcoded and cannot be overridden.

Troubleshooting
Adapter not found
- Make sure your adapter is plugged into the OBD-II port (usually under the dashboard, driver's side)
- Turn your vehicle's ignition to ON (engine can be off)
- Check that Bluetooth is enabled on your iPhone (Settings → Bluetooth)
- In MechanicAI, pull down to refresh the adapter list
- If still not found, unplug the adapter for 10 seconds, plug it back in, and try again
Connected but no data
- Make sure the engine is running (some data only appears with engine on)
- Wait 10 seconds after connecting — some adapters need time to initialize
- Try turning the car off, waiting 30 seconds, then restarting
- If the issue persists, your adapter may not support your vehicle's protocol
AI diagnostics not working
- Check your internet connection — AI diagnostics require data
- Try closing and reopening the app
- If the problem continues, contact us using the form below
No codes found
Not every problem triggers a diagnostic code. "No codes found" means your vehicle's computer hasn't flagged any current issues. This is normal — if your check engine light is on but no codes appear, the light may have been recently cleared or the issue may be intermittent.
